Questions, answered plainly

The things families ask first.

If your question isn't here, write to hello@ettacalls.com — a person reads everything.

Will my mom know she's talking to an AI?

Yes — always, and proudly. Etta introduces herself as an AI companion at the start of every call. We think trust is the product: a check-in service that starts with a small deception isn't one worth having. Most seniors, once asked honestly, genuinely enjoy having "their" Etta call.

What if she doesn't want the calls?

Then they don't happen. Your parent consents personally before the first check-in call, and can stop the service at any moment just by saying so on a call. Their yes — and their no — always outranks the subscription.

What happens if she doesn't answer?

Etta retries a little later, then sends her a text. If there's still no reply, we work through the contact chain you chose — a neighbor, a sibling, you — so an unanswered phone never just disappears into silence.

Are the calls recorded?

Calls are transcribed to produce the family summary, and your parent is told this plainly when they sign up. Summaries go only to the family members they agreed to. We don't sell data, run ads, or use conversations for marketing — ever.

How long do you keep the recordings?

Thirty days, then the audio is deleted — from us and from the provider that stores it. The written summaries stay, so you keep the record of how your parent has been doing without us keeping hours of their private conversation. If you'd rather hold on to the audio, the call archive add-on keeps it for a year and lets you download it. Either way, family only ever hear the calls your parent said they could.

Will Etta try to sell my parent anything?

No, and this one isn't a policy we could quietly change — it's the reason these calls sit outside telemarketing law. Etta never mentions pricing, never suggests an upgrade, and never tells your parent what you're paying. Everything you can add to a plan is added by you, on your family page. If your parent asks what it costs, Etta says plainly that their family arranged it, and that it's nothing they need to worry about.

Can Etta call both my parents?

Yes — each on their own phone, at their own time, for $15 a month more than one. And the second parent goes through exactly the same gate as the first: they call Etta themselves, hear what she is, and say yes in their own voice. Nothing is billed for them until they do, and if they say no, nothing happens and you're not charged.

Can my brother and sister split the cost with me?

Yes, and it's free to set up. Invite them from your family page and each of them pays their own share on their own card; every payment they make comes straight off your bill. If someone stops, you go back to paying the full amount and nothing about the calls changes. We won't text your siblings out of the blue, either — you send them the link yourself.

Is this a medical or emergency service?

No. Etta is a wellbeing and companionship service, not a medical device, and she's no substitute for emergency response. If a call ever suggests something urgent, Etta's job is simple: get the humans who love them informed, fast.
